How To Be That Light On Top of the Hill: Fulfilling Jesus' Direction

I'm not sure how it happened but it happened again. One moment I'm surfing through Facebook, and the next moment I'm engrossed in an article about a man who kept his daughter prisoner in the basement of their home for 24 years. The story tore my heart and made me say, “What is going on in the world?”

That's not the first time I've made that statement and it won't be the last. You’ve probably said these words more than once. While I may be stunned and sometimes shocked by the behavior and actions of non-Christians and Christians alike in our society, I cannot bury my head and believe the only action I have left is prayer.

No, I have to do more. In addition to prayer, my personal accountability and responsibility as a Christ follower is to be a light. The more I shine the glory of God, the more heads turn toward him.

Picture Sunny in iRobot

Do you remember the movie iRobot? One scene which comes to mind is when Sonny, the one robot who had not become defective, stands on a hill near an abandoned bridge. All the other robots at the bottom of the hill turn to look up at Sonny. He is like a bright light in the darkness of chaos caused by their malfunctioning.

As Christ followers, we have to be on the top of the hill exhibiting the glory of God in our behavior, actions, and lifestyle. When others see us functioning differently in times of malfunctioning and dysfunctioning, it instills curiosity. Why are we different? The Lord Jesus is why.

Get in position

Are you in a position to be a light? To be the light on top of the hill you have to be in position. To get in position:

  • Make God a priority

    - Praise him like he's the only one worthy because He is

  • Become familiar with God

    - Study your instruction manual (the Bible) on a regular basis

  • Communicate with God

    - Just open up and speak to Him - it's that easy

As you continually engage in these activities, you position yourself at the hilltop ready to let the light in you shine for the world to see.

How to let the light shine

Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come into the world to be a Comforter and a Teacher to those who believe in Christ. The Holy Spirit resides in you patiently waiting for a relationship of submission. When you let the Holy Spirit in you lead, the light glows brightly on the hill.

Jesus said it best in Matthew 5:16 (NKJV), “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

This year are you ready to be that light at the top of the hill?
